Developments are published in domestic and foreign specialized editions.
The institute publishes a collection of developments Chemistry and The Manufacture Technology of Basic Chemical Industry.
NIOCHIM's brief history
The date of the Institute's foundation is September 21, 1923. Its first name was UkrGIPKh (Ukrainian State Institute of Applied Chemistry). During 1938-1941 the Institute became an All-Union research center of soda industry. In 1944 the institute was renamed All-Union Institute of Soda Industry. It developed domestic patterns of highly productive equipment and conducted research works to improve engineering process of Solvay soda ash.
Since 1949 All-Union Institute of Soda Industry became the main design engineering facility of Donets Soda Plant (now Lisichankaya Soda Company) and undertook a project of capacity extension up to 430,000 tons per year - the first large project in the institute history.
In 1958 All-Union Institute of Soda Industry was reorganized into Research Institute of Basic Chemistry (NIOCHIM). It began working with barium compounds, mineral fillers, adsorbents, sodium sulfate and bisulfate, coagulants and other chemicals. In 1960 the Institute got the functions of the main design engineer of Slavyansk Soda Plant.
On April 30, 1965 the Institute was reorganized into State Research and Design Institute of Basic Chemistry (NIOCHIM). Research was concentrated on manufacturing processes of soda ash and connected products; inorganic peroxides; filtration, crystallization, evaporation and drying of chemicals were encouraged; the Institute also designed new plants and updated existing enterprises.
In 1967-1969 the Institute became design engineer of Sterlitamak Soda- Cement Combined Works and Berezniki Soda Plant, and during the 1970s- 1980s Mikhailovka Soda Plant, Leninsk Mining and Chemical Plant, Karabogazsulfat, Kuchuk Sulfate Plant. In 1969 the Institute began engineering of Crimean Soda Plant, now the leading manufacturer of soda ash in Ukraine.
In early 1970s for the first time in the world a wasteless manufacturing process for soda and potash products from nepheline processing m,aterials was introduced at Pikalevo and Achinsk Alumina Plants, which successfully operate from that time on. Then update projects of ammonia-soda plants of the former USSR were developed; projects of new plants for calcium chloride and ammonium, barium and strontium salts, precipitated silica, fine-grained calcium hydroxide, chemically precipitated chalk, fire extinguishing powders, phosphoric compounds, household chemicals were undertaken. Research in the field of manufacture of fumed silica, technical sodium sulfate, technical magnesium chloride (bischofite), technical magnesium sulfate (epsomite), sodium sulfide and sodium hydrogen sulfide were performed. Much attention was paid to search of natural sodium sulfate sources at Kuchuk Sulfate Plant and Karabogazsulfat.
According to NIOCHIM engineering and with personal participation of its specialists a large soda plant at Devnya, Bulgaria (1975), and a caustic soda plant in Zeway, Ethiopia (1993-1994) were built and commissioned.
Research products of the Institute are in much demand now both in Ukraine and all over the world. Projects of new plant construction and update of operating enterprises are under way. In 2003-2007 new high-performance processes and equipment were developed and introduced.
A project of dense soda ash plant using a steam calciner at Crimean Soda Plant Company has been completed.
At Polish and Turkish enterprises large capacity column equipment of NIOCHIM design was installed.
At Sterlitamak Soda Company a liquid calcium chloride plant was put into operation; update projects of soda ash line #2, of brine purification and sewer filtration at distiller lye facility, of granular calcium chloride pilot plant were completed. Since 2005 when Permneftegazpererabotka Works was put into operation, sodium hydrogen sulfide has been successfully produced.
